Nearly four years ago, when I was expecting our first child, I began to explore watercolor. Oil painting had been my main form of art for the previous decade, but the fumes and toxins in the pigments motivated me to look for a cleaner option. As I’ve looked back on this shift, I’ve realized it was a little deeper than that as well. I think something about becoming a mother was pushing me to step into all sorts of unmarked territory. It felt like a time to play, to experiment, to take in the world in new ways. When I swished a watercolor soaked brush over paper, I found that the color always surprised me as it settled into the fibers of the paper and dried in different ways. It was so fun!
Since I loved watercolor painting so much, I began to wonder how I might be able to turn it into a sustainable business. One day when a friend moved from her home and asked me to make a painting of it, an idea popped into my head - how special would it be if a realtor gave a small painting like this to their client? Homes carry so much heart and stories for many of us - my husband and I got married in our backyard and have created more memories than we can count with loved ones under our roof. I’d be a teary mess if we ever sold it! What better way to honor the “goodbye” to a home and the start of a new chapter than with a painting to capture it?
Since then, I’ve had the honor of creating hundreds of closing gifts for realtors! When I tell you - this has been so special it’s because of the texts and emails I’ve received from agents and their clients telling me how much their home meant to them. Getting to do something I love, creating meaningful work - is there anything better?
